The short version
Rational Forge is a software and publishing business based in British Columbia, Canada. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean Rational Forge, and "you" means anyone who visits our websites, uses our issue tracker or our software, or otherwise uses the Services.
This policy applies to:
We call all of these together the Services. Websites and applications behave very differently, so where something applies to only one of them, the section says so plainly. If you only want to know what an application does with your data, that is section 5.
Like every web server, ours records a short log entry for each request it serves. That entry holds your IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, the response status, the referring page if there was one, and your browser's user agent string.
We use these logs to keep the sites running, to investigate errors, and to identify abuse such as attacks or automated scraping. We do not use them to build a profile of you, and we do not combine them with anything else. They are kept for a short period and then deleted. They are produced and stored by our hosting provider on our behalf.
Our lawful basis for this is our legitimate interest in operating and securing our own websites.
Our website pages set no cookies. There is no advertising, no cross-site tracking, and no third-party marketing script on them. Because of that, there is no cookie banner to click through.
Our pages use a single item of browser storage. If you switch between the light and dark appearance, your choice is saved in your own browser so the site looks the same next time. That value stays on your device, is never sent to us, and clearing your browser data removes it.
The issue tracker sets one cookie, and only when you sign in, so that it can tell it is still you as you move between pages. That cookie is strictly necessary for signing in to work at all, it holds no advertising or tracking data, and it is removed when you sign out or when the session expires.
Analytics. We want to know which pages people find useful, so we can spend our time improving those. On our website pages, and on the issue tracker, we use a privacy-preserving analytics tool that sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. It does not assign you an identifier, it cannot follow you to another website, and it does not let us single out an individual visitor. What it records is aggregate: how many times a page was viewed, which site referred the visit, the approximate country, and the general type of device and browser. The tool does not store your IP address or use it to identify you, and we see only aggregate reports, never data about an individual visit.
Because this tool records nothing that can identify you, there is nothing for a Do Not Track signal to switch off. We do not track you as an individual whether or not your browser sends one.
The issue tracker at tickets.rationalforge.com is where you report problems and request features. It is the one part of the Services that holds personal information, and only if you choose to use it.
If you create an account, we store:
Issues are not private. What you submit can be read by Rational Forge and by other users of the tracker, and may be readable by anyone. Please treat an issue as a public message. Do not include passwords, connection strings, access tokens, licence keys, or personal information about other people. If a report only makes sense with one of those, say so in the issue and send the detail to us by email instead.
We use what you submit only to understand and fix the problem, to build the thing you asked for, and to reply to you about it. Our lawful basis is your consent, given when you choose to create an account and submit a report, together with our legitimate interest in supporting and improving our products.
We keep issues for as long as they remain useful for maintaining our products, because old reports explain why things work the way they do. If you want your account closed, or your email address removed from it, email us and we will do it.
This section covers RFCommand and every other application we publish. It is short, because there is very little to say.
Our applications contain no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no telemetry. They do not collect, transmit, sell or share your files, your file names, your folder contents, your keystrokes, your usage statistics or your personal information. We operate no server that receives your data from an application. There is no account to create, and no sign-in to Rational Forge.
Our applications store the following in your own user profile, on your own computer:
None of this leaves your device. Removing the application's data folder removes all of it.
Passwords and access tokens you choose to save are encrypted before they are written to disk, using the operating system's own per-user protection, and are tied to your account on that computer. Another account on the same machine cannot read them. We deliberately do not describe the exact mechanism here. You may always decline to save a credential and be asked for it each time instead.
Our applications can connect to services you configure, such as file transfer servers, cloud storage providers and databases. Those connections run directly between your computer and the service you named, only when you ask for them, and only to carry out what you requested. Rational Forge is not part of that connection and receives nothing from it.
When you connect to a third-party service, that service's own privacy policy and terms apply to what it does with your data. Where a provider uses an industry-standard sign-in flow, you enter your credentials on the provider's own page, never inside our application, and we never see them.
Where an application needs a licence key, the key is checked entirely on your computer. Checking it does not contact Rational Forge or anyone else, so our applications still send us nothing. A licence key contains the licence details and the name given when the licence was bought, so that the application can show who it is licensed to. It is stored with your other settings on your own device.
If you email us, we hold that message and your email address for as long as we need them to deal with what you wrote about, and for a reasonable period afterwards in case the subject comes up again. We do not add you to a mailing list, because we do not run one.
We use the limited information described above only to:
We do not, and will not:
We share personal information only in these situations:
We share nothing from our applications, because our applications send us nothing to share.
Our websites and the issue tracker run on servers operated by our hosting provider, which may be located outside Canada, and analytics data may also be processed outside Canada. Information stored in another country can be subject to the laws of that country, including lawful access requests by its authorities. By using our websites you understand that your information may be processed outside Canada. Anything held by our applications stays on your own device and is not transferred anywhere by us.
Server logs are kept for a short period and then deleted. Analytics data is aggregate and holds nothing that identifies you. Tracker accounts and issues are kept while they remain useful for maintaining our products, or until you ask us to remove them. Email is kept while the matter is live, and for a reasonable period afterwards.
Under Canadian privacy law, and under comparable laws elsewhere including the GDPR for visitors in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area, you can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask us to correct anything that is wrong, ask us to delete it, ask us to restrict or object to how we use it, and ask for it in a portable form. You can withdraw your consent at any time, though if you withdraw it for your tracker account we will have to close that account.
Email Support@RationalForge.com and we will respond within a reasonable time, and in any case within the period the applicable law allows. We may ask you to confirm that you control the account or the email address in question, so that we do not hand your information to someone else. Exercising these rights costs you nothing.
If you are not satisfied with how we handle your request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or to the privacy regulator where you live.
The Services are not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account on the issue tracker, contact us and we will remove it.
Our sites are served over an encrypted connection. Tracker passwords are stored only as hashes, so we cannot read them and could not tell you your password even if you asked. We keep the software we run updated. In our applications, saved credentials are encrypted with the operating system's own per-user protection. No system connected to the internet is perfectly secure, so we do not claim otherwise, but we take measures appropriate to the small amount of information involved.
Our pages load a web font, a stylesheet framework and our analytics beacon from third-party content delivery networks. Loading a file from another server means your browser makes a request to it, which necessarily reveals your IP address to that server. We send no other information to them, and the analytics beacon is the cookieless, non-identifying tool described in section 3.
We also link out to places we do not run, including app stores, online booksellers, community sites and code-hosting services. Once you follow one of those links you are on their site, and their own privacy policy applies. We have no control over what they do.
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will make that clear rather than quietly editing the text. Continuing to use the Services after a change means you accept the updated policy.
